Calling all dads, grandpas, uncles, 'adopted' male figures and their kids! (Though "kids" is wide open to interpretation!) Family Ministries is sponsoring a Dad & Me Date on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013. Things will kickoff at 11am with a taco lunch at the church, followed by some 'rolling' good times bowling at Fat Cat Lanes. In this fast-paced, busy world that we live in it's nice to slow down and spend some quality time with not just the family, but our church family as well. So, whether the "kids" are 6, 16, or 46 we invite all dads to take part in this afternoon of fun with the kids. This past Sunday, Oct. 6, I took the kids on a field trip, showing them what's what with the various bulletin boards that we claim as our own in Sunday school land - outside the classrooms. The hope is to not only engage our parents, but to get the kids involved too. First we wandered down the hallway and we talked about how they can support their fabulous Sunday school teachers with the Sunday School Teacher of the Month bulletin board - pictures, cards, notes...Anyone care to guess what this Sunday's Chapel Time activity is going to be? Next we talked about things they might want to check out on our main bulletin board. And that's when the excitement level amped up about 110%. You see, last week's Pinterest Find of the Week was the Erupting Pumpkin Experiment! We discovered this particular activity courtesy of the blog, Growing a Jeweled Rose: Learning and Loving Through Messy Play. Since we're firmly in the land of October it is the perfect time to discover just what your pumpkin can do for you, in this case it can, well, erupt...throw up, whatever. The kids were so excited by this experiment our Pinterest Find of the Week will have to be held over one more week just by popular demand. And all you need for this fun experiment is a pumpkin, baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring (see below). Be sure to take a peek at what's new on our bulletin boards, we're taking the chance and time to make them as interactive as possible. See you in Sunday school; bring a friend! The animated children's Bible series, Superbook that got its start in the '80s, but has been revamped and updated with a team of "award-winning animators, writers, and producers" is heading to ABC Family July 1-5, 2013. Just what is Superbook and why should you and your family tune in starting Monday, July 1? Let's find out... What is 'Superbook?' Superbook teaches children in every language and culture timeless moral truths and life lessons through the captivating, Bible-based adventures of two time-traveling children and their robot friend. The familiar and the futuristic interact with ancient people, places and events to create a sense of wonder, anticipation, empowerment, and personal breakthrough as the children witness God's interaction with man. Superbook is always an exciting journey, full of discovery - with a transformational outcome. Throughout this 5-day event on ABC Family, which will air 9:30 a.m. Eastern time, Superbook will be sharing Bible stories from the beginning of the Bible to the end:
So mark those calendars, set those DVRs and get ready to catch this "Amazing Bible-based adventure" on ABC Family, July 1-5, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Laurel UMC Spring Carnival: Saturday, May 18, 11a.m. - 2p.m. With December fast approaching there are a few dates that we want you to be aware of. First, Advent Wreaths. We'll be handing out Advent Wreaths (or candles for those of you who still have your wreaths from years past) on Sunday, Dec. 2nd. The first Sunday of Advent is Dec. 2nd. Second, Christmas Program. 'Tis the season to set our sights toward the Christmas program. Parents, guardians, go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief, as this year's program requires virtually no memorization! (Really, go ahead and do a happy dance - I know I did). Because of that we'll rehearse during Chapel Time and only require two Saturday rehearsals (including the dress rehearsal). Christmas Program Practice Schedule:
Third, Hanging of the Greens. Bring the family and come help decorate and prepare our church for the Christmas season on Saturday, Dec. 8th at 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. From your youngest to your oldest, we will have things to for all to help with. The kids are especially invited to get the tree set up in the Fellowship Hall, followed by some crafts. We hope to see you there! Fourth, Caroling. Join us Sunday, Dec 16th at 4:45 p.m. for Christmas Caroling to the local care centers. We will meet at UMC at 4:45 p.m. drive to The Crossings, Evergreen around 5:30 p.m. and then to Tendernest around 6:00 p.m. After caroling we will return to UMC for some hot cocoa, chili and visiting. A signup sheet will be out on the table at church. Please be sure to sign up if you are planning on attending so we can make sure there is enough food. The leaves are changing and falling, which can only mean one thing. It's time to begin searching for the perfect pumpkin and then making the all-important carving decision. This year we've got a couple faithful twists to add to your pumpkin carving options. Our first option is a Shine for Jesus template, which you can see a small glimpse of to the left.
Another option is one that we carved during Chapel Time a few years ago. Here are the shapes of the face (see a picture, here):
Following is The Pumpkin Prayer to go along with this particular template: Dear God, As I carve my pumpkin help me say this prayer: Open my mind so I can learn about You; (Cut the top of the pumpkin) Take away all my sin and forgive me for the wrong things I do. (Clean out the inside) Open my eyes so Your love I will see; (Cut the eyes out in heart shapes) I’m so sorry for turning up my nose to all you’ve given me. (Cut a nose in the shape of a cross) Open my ears so your word I will hear. (Cut the ears shaped like the Bible)-we did rectangles Open my mouth so I can tell others You’re near (cut the mouth in the shape of a fish) Let Your light shine in all I say and do! Amen. (Place a candle inside and light it) Don't forget to save those pumpkin seeds to bake for a yummy snack! Happy Halloween! Family Ministries will be hosting a movie and popcorn night in the Sanctuary on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7p.m., showing Smitty, rated PG. They’ll bring the popcorn, you just need to bring yourself something to drink. Drinks must have a lid, please! About Smitty: When 13-year-old Ben Barrett gets into trouble with the law again, his struggling single mother sends him to spend the summer with his estranged grandfather, Jack. Sensing that Ben needs a friend, Jack gets him a lovable abandoned mutt named Smitty. Can the dog and a friendly neighbor teach Ben about friendship, family, and responsibility? Starring Mira Sorvino, Peter Fonda, and Louis Gossett Jr. A few weeks ago, we made Praying Arm Pretzels, which is part of how we get the kids thinking about Lent. This is always an incredibly popular Chapel Time activity for both the kids and the adults. Making these pretzels is easy-peasy, and there's always a lot of interest in the recipe following the activity, so here you go: Pretzels: A Reminder to Pray During Lent - (This is what I read to the kids before we get started) Early Christians often stood or kneeled with arms crossed over their chests while praying. The monks, to remind the children to pray during Lent, twisted bread dough to resemble praying arms. This bread was called "little arms" brachellae, later brezel, and then pretzel. They can be formed easily from frozen bread dough. Recipe with frozen bread dough: Ingredients
Instructions:
Gracious God, we ask you to bless these pretzels which we are about to eat. Each time we eat pretzels this season may we be reminded that Lent is a time for prayer. Help us to remember to pray each day. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. Obviously you can make these pretzels any time of year; no matter when you make them, it's a great activity for the whole family! It's hard to believe we are already less than a week away from the Fall Carnival, but here it is! Let me give you a run down of the when's, where's, and what's just one more time:
When: Saturday, October 30, 2010 from 11:00 - 2:00 p.m. Where: Laurel United Methodist Church Basement Cost: There will be NO ADMISSIONS FEES, but tickets to play games will cost 25 cents a piece. **Please note, if you bring any number of canned food items, you will receive 3 tickets free! We will be collecting cans from 10/30 to 11/21. *Remember, if you plan to go out in the community to collect cans, you will need to get the okay from your parents first.* October 31, 2010 - You are invited to wear your costumes to Sunday School again this year as you did last year. We will be holding a contest again to vote on the Most Original, Cutest, Funnies, Best All Around...Please bring a friend and share in the fun and fellowship!
